Welcome to Alamogordo!
News & Events

As with many old west towns, Alamogordo's existence came as a result of the railroad construction throughout the southwest. It was founded in 1898 and in it's early days, Alamogordo was a ranching and farming town that grew into a thriving community from the commerce the railroad created. Alamogordo soon changed forever when the US entered World War II and discovered the location and climate of the southwest was conducive to building what is known of today as Holloman Air Force Base in 1942. With the establishment of the US military in the area it wasn't long before scientific research and development became present near the small town of Alamogordo.

The first atomic bomb explosion detonated on July 16, 1945, one of WW II's defining moments was researched and successfully tested not far from where Alamogordo stands today. Trinity Site is one of the man made events and natural wonders that Alamogordo is known for. Others include, White Sands National Monument, just 20 minutes away is home to the worlds largest gypsum sand dunes spanning 275 square miles of desert and Oliver Lee State Park, just 15 minutes away, hosts the historic site where many battles were fought between the Union Army and Apache Nation. Indeed, Alamogordo and its surrounding neighbors of La Luz, Tularosa, Carrizozo and Cloudcroft are rich in history and natural beauty. Alamogordo's mild climate with an average 70 degree annual temperature and location close to winter activities makes it a diverse place to live and play.
