Over 100 years ago Cloudcroft was established primarily as a viable source of timber for the construction of the railroad. During this time, railroad owners surveyed the mountain and found it to be an untouched wonderland that held promise to becoming a tourist community for many of the pioneer settlers seeking respite from the sweltering heat of the lower elevation communities of Alamogordo and surrounding areas. Upon completion of the railroad to Cloudcroft, tourism quickly grew as people from all venues (artists, pioneers, miners, businessmen, etc) came to enjoy the cool pines and luxurious accommodations found in Cloudcroft. This trend continued until 1948 when the railroad was abandoned. Transportation was readily available and although the novelty of the passenger trains was gone tourists continued to seek out the mountain village of Cloudcroft. Today, Cloudcroft continues to provide its guests with a variety of seasonal activities throughout the year. From hiking & horseback riding, hunting & camping, to skiiing and snowmobiling there is always something to experience in this small mountain community. A community who has held onto its heritage of rugged pioneer life while moving forward toward the inclusion of modern amenities that living today brings.
